Alto Lakes Winter 2026: What's Open and Key Dates to Know

At Alto Lakes Golf and Country Club, the winter season is already on the calendar. Kokopelli's clubhouse is closed for the 2026-2027 winter and reopens April 1, 2027. The outdoor pool and waterslide are closed too. Several things that stay open are close to home, though. The fitness center's key-fob door opens at 4am. Alto Lake's trails finished their fire-recovery work in September. The Spencer Theater has three performances lined up between late November and Christmas, and Ski Apache's listed opening date is Saturday, November 28, the same morning as the Ruidoso Turkey Trot. Between now and the end of December, most good days start in or near Alto, and Midtown takes only a few trips with set dates.

What the club drops, and what it keeps

Here's what's closed or reduced at the club for the coming months, and what isn't.

Club amenity Winter 2026-27 status
Kokopelli Clubhouse Closed; reopens April 1, 2027
Outdoor pool and waterslide Closed for the 2026-2027 winter season
Indoor Exercise Pool Running lane swim and aquatic classes; can be rented for private parties
Fitness center, key-fob access 4am to 12am, daily
Fitness center, staffed hours Tuesday through Sunday, 8am to 7pm; closed Monday

The Kokopelli notice covers the clubhouse, not the golf course. As of this writing, the club's golf page still lists the standard weekly closure days: Alto on Monday, The Outlaw on Tuesday and Kokopelli on Thursday. It hasn't posted winter course closures, frost rules or winter rates. The dining page still shows the summer clubhouse schedule. Under it, Alto serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday and The Outlaw is closed Tuesdays. Treat both as summer numbers until the club posts winter ones.

The fitness center is the amenity whose schedule doesn't change. With fob access you can get in 20 hours a day, seven days a week, so a lap swim or a workout before work doesn't depend on the season. The indoor pool also rents for private swim parties, and the Fitness Center books them at 575-336-3136. That's an indoor birthday option for December that never comes up in July.

The club has also posted a "Thanksgiving To-Go 2026" menu on its dining menus page. The items, price and order deadline weren't on the public listing when this was written, so check with the clubhouse before planning around it.

Alto Lake came back in September

The biggest change near home happened while most people were looking at the leaves. From mid-May through the end of August, crews worked on the burned slopes below the Alto Lake dam left by the South Fork Fire. They contour-felled dead trees, cleared woody debris, mulched with forestry equipment and added erosion controls to slow stormwater and help new growth take hold. While the work went on, the trails below the dam and the Alto Lake Disc Golf Course were closed. KKOB reported in May that the lake itself would stay open for fishing during the project.

The Village's September 2026 update says the work is done and both the trails below the dam and the disc golf course are open again. The Village first closed Alto Lake indefinitely on June 28, 2024, after South Fork Fire damage to its trails and facilities. This fall, the lake, the trails below the dam and the disc golf course are all open.

The rules matter more now that the outdoor pool at the club is closed. Per the Village's Alto Lake page:

  • Open daily, 5am to 11pm, with no fee for entry, parking or picnicking
  • Fishing is year-round during open hours, and anglers 12 and older need a New Mexico fishing license
  • No swimming
  • Non-motorized boats are allowed year-round with a permit, which costs $5 a day or $20 a year and covers both Alto and Grindstone through December 31

That last point affects anyone thinking about an annual boat permit now. Permits run through December 31, so one bought in mid-October covers about 11 weeks at Alto and Grindstone, and next year's permit starts fresh in January.

The Spencer handles the evenings

With Kokopelli's clubhouse closed, the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts up the road on Spencer Drive covers several nights out this season. It's running what it calls its Fall Winter Spring Season 2026/27.

  1. The Sixties Show, Sunday, November 22, 2pm. Tickets run $36 to $79, with a $25 public buffet and a $55 Founders Dinner at noon.
  2. A Christmas Carol, Thursday, December 10, 7pm. Tickets run $36 to $79, with the $25 buffet or the $55 Founders Dinner at 5pm.
  3. The Nutcracker by the Ruidoso Academy of Ballet and Dance, Saturday, December 19, at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday, December 20, at 2pm. Tickets are $42.

The buffet and Founders Dinner are sold separately from show tickets, and both are scheduled two hours before curtain. That puts a meal and a show on one evening's plan, which helps in a season with fewer club dining rooms open. These three are the November and December dates. The full 2026/27 season runs into spring.

Two weeks before the Spencer's first show, Noisy Water's Enchanted Vine at 492 Fort Stanton Road in Alto is hosting a Wine Club Thanksgiving Feast on November 7, 6 to 8pm. It costs $50 per adult and $22 per child 12 and under. The event is limited to wine club members and invited guests, and reservations are due Monday, November 2.

November 28 pulls in two directions

Two things are set for Saturday, November 28, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Down in Ruidoso, the Ruidoso Turkey Trot 5K runs 10am to 1pm from White Mountain Sports Complex on The Links Trail, 685 Hull Road. The Village Parks and Recreation reservation calendar lists it at $0.

Up the mountain, Ski New Mexico's season roundup, dated September 22, 2026, lists Ski Apache as "Opening November 28, 2026." According to that roundup, the resort is watching what could be a very strong El Niño, and its Snowfactory remains its early-season tool because it can make snow when temperatures are too warm for regular snowmaking. Ski Apache's own site still tells visitors to check back for opening-date updates. So November 28 is a published target, not a confirmed opening.

If you're comparing a season pass with day tickets, here are Ski Apache's posted 2026-27 prices:

Rider Season pass Non-holiday full day, window Non-holiday full day, online or kiosk
Adult $750 for ages 6-54 $175 $165
Child 6-12 $750 for ages 6-54 $130 $130
Seniors 55-69, military $700 $130 $130
Seniors 70+ $250 $72 $72

The $700 senior and military pass also covers college students. At window prices, the adult pass costs about the same as four and a third non-holiday days. Holiday full-day tickets are higher: $195 for adults and $150 for children 6 to 12 and seniors 55 to 69 at the window. The 70+ ticket stays at $72. The resort advertises early-bird pass rates "for a limited time" but hasn't posted a deadline. Its ticket page and FAQ also disagree on the free-kids age cutoff, 12 and under versus 13 and under, so confirm with the resort before you buy.

Getting there means Ski Run Road, NM 532. The Ski Apache road-status widget, last updated September 6, 2026, read "OPEN Road Work in Progress." The NMDOT project notice covers drainage and roadway work near Forest Service Road 127A, mileposts 2.25 to 2.8. That's where South Fork Fire burn scars, undersized drainage pipes and erosion have damaged the road. The notice forecast one-lane closures with a mobile system during construction. The Village said in late June that the work was underway and asked travelers to allow extra time. No completion notice had been posted as of this writing, so check road status before an opening-day drive.

The Midtown dates worth the drive

With so much near home, Ruidoso's holiday calendar comes down to a few fixed dates:

  • Ruidoso Christmas Jubilee, November 13 to 15, Ruidoso Convention Center, 111 Sierra Blanca Drive. Hours are Friday noon to 5, Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 3. Admission is $5; children 12 and under and active military with ID get in free, and a limited number of $25 VIP tickets are available.
  • A Christmas Affair, November 20 to 22, same venue. Admission is $3, and hours are Friday noon to 6, Saturday 9 to 6 and Sunday 10 to 4.
  • Christmas in the Park, Thursday, December 3, 5:30 to 8pm, Wingfield Park, 300 Center Street. The tree lighting is around 6pm, followed by sleigh rides and photos with Santa.
  • Festival of Lights Parade, Saturday, December 5, 5:30 to 7pm, along Sudderth Drive. It's free, and activities continue afterward at Wingfield Park.

The Jubilee and A Christmas Affair fall on back-to-back weekends at the same convention center. The Spencer's Sixties Show matinee is on Sunday, November 22, the last day of A Christmas Affair. That makes it easy to pair a morning at the craft show with an afternoon back in Alto.
